Asleep in the Deep (29 min) (Killing Joke Productions Inc.)

Asleep in the Deep is an experimental/narrative film adaptation of an H.P. Lovecraft story. In the vein of David Lynch and Maya Deren, the film follows a punk girl, Alyce, down the rabbit hole into a strange land. She is first tormented by a group of upper-class dinner-goers but soon finds a strange building with even stranger inhabitants. Her new odd neighbors are topped by a reclusive violin player, Zahn, who mesmerizes all with his playing.

Alyce eventually meets and befriends the black, older violin player to find out too late that he plays for all of the lost children in the world. The next time they meet, Zahn is nothing more than a living-dead musician and Alyce runs from the strange land never to find it again.

All of this wouldn't be so hard if he wasn't also struggling with a bad case of depression.

Earl Jenkins is a good man with a troubled soul. He and his brother Ben have continued on with the family tradition of running the farm that has been in his family for several generations. When the threat of losing that farm becomes very real Earl finds a way to save the farm even if it means losing everything else.

Conceptualized, filmed, and completed over the course of three days “Souled” is the first of four short films in Dark Winter’s “Crossroads” series. It is a story told in a straight forward manner but rife with symbolism that makes it a deep, enriching experience that shows just how much a desperate man will sacrifice for those he loves and the heritage he feels he must preserve.

“Souled” will stay with you forever.
