Little considered at the time of its release, Massimo Pirri’s L’immoralità soon faded into obscurity. Yet it is one of those films which belongs to the other (secret) side of the history of Italian film, that of films whose classification lies outside the mainstream, the genre or the auteur. L’immortalità is a psychological thriller which opens with an injured man on the run hiding in the grounds of a villa, although the pace is slow and much time is dedicated to eroticism. However, Pirri’s film also makes fun of a certain type of American film as it elegantly and sensitively describes the complicity between the pedophile-murderer and young, intelligent, animal-loving victim. The strongest feature of the film is Lisa Gastoni, whose character seems to belong to the same physically and psychologically perverted middle-class as the character in Samperi’s Come Play with Me with which – ten years previously – she first proved her talents as an actress.
In L’immoralità Lisa Gastoni plays the part of a kept-woman: a beautiful, seductive, cynical, ruthless blonde imprisoned in a relationship with a rich man who has recently been paralyzed. Ready to manipulate any situation to her own advantage, this fascinating character tearfully admits to her daughter that she is unable to love and be a mother to her. Indeed, the most interesting moment of the film is when Simona witnesses her mother’s antics with the criminal and jealously opposes her behavior in a truly well-structured dialogue. .
The anomalous “triangle” which is created is pivotal to the story as the rivalry – reminiscent of the rivalry between the characters of Di Leo’s Seduction – between the character interpreted by Lisa Gastoni and her daughter interpreted by Jenny Tamburi gradually increases. Apart from some problems with the script, L’immoralità is a classic narrative film which nevertheless convinces the audience right up until its shocking dramatic epilogue.
