The late great Juzo Itami, whose works have been absent on DVD in Japan, finally get the royal treatment in this limited edition collector's set featuring five digitally remastered first-to-DVD films.
THE FUNERAL [OSOSHIKI] (1984):
The beginning of the film shows the father-in-law of the protagonist dies unexpectedly of a heart attack. The remainder of the film is episodic, moving from one incident to another over the course of the three-day funeral, which is held (as is customary) in the home. These incidents contrast old ways and new ways, young and old, ritual ceremony and true feelings, often comically, but sometimes with real poignancy.

TAMPOPO [DANDELION] (1985):
In this humorous paean to the joys of food, the main story is about trucker Goro who rides into town like a modern Shane to help Tampopo set up the perfect fast-food noodle restaurant. Woven into this main story are a number of smaller stories about the importance of food, ranging from a gangster who mixes hot sex with food to an old lady terrorizing a shopkeeper by compulsive squeezing of his wares.

TALES OF A GOLDEN GEISHA [A-GE-MAN] (1990):
A deliberately episodic tale, which takes slices of the lead character's life, beginning with her discovery as an abandoned baby, through childhood training as a somewhat gawky geisha, finding her first rich patron, then leaving the profession to work as a bank secretary.

THE LAST DANCE [DAIBYONIN] (1993):
A successful Japanese movie director in his 60s becomes increasingly ill while working on his latest film. His family, friends, and doctor try to keep the secret of his terminal cancer from him, but it gradually becomes clear. Coming to terms with his own mortality is painful, and involves some major conflicts with his wife and the hospital staff. But having done so, he realizes he doesn't want to die in the hospital on a life support machine. He manages to finish his final film, and, enjoying the last days of his life as never before, he dies at home surrounded by all the people he cares about.

A QUIET LIFE [SHIZUKA NA SEIKATSU] (1995):
Based on the 1995 novel of the same name by Nobel Prize in Literature (1994) winner Kenzaburo Oe. The story revolves around the experiences of Iiyo, a mentally handicapped adolescent boy and his younger sister Maa as she cares for him in their parents' absence. The characters and story are loosely based on Oe's own handicapped son, and both father and son reflect on the movie adaptation in a very interesting interview. The movie was nominated for and won four Japanese Academy Awards.
The story deals directly with the unique difficulties faced by the handicapped and by their loved ones. Maa faces the difficulty of overcoming suspicions that Iiyo may somehow be inclined to harm children (which he isn't) and of locating someone of good character to help them (which she doesn't). Iiyo's difficulties include undergoing the humiliation of seizures in public and the sudden summoning of strength to aid his sister in the moment she needs him the most. The story is rather powerful in its own right, and certainly when accompanied with the mini-documentary of Oe and his son, in which Oe tries to imply that most of the movie, including Iiyo's courageous actions in rescuing his sister, are based on real life events.
