In Ken Loach's Ae Fond Kiss, Casim Khan (Atta Yaqub) is the beloved only son of first generation Pakistani immigrants. His parents Tariq and Sadia are devout Muslims and plan for him to marry his beautiful cousin Jasmine, who is soon to arrive in the UK. Plans go awry when Casim meets the independent, sparky and beautiful Roisin (Eva Birthistle) an Irish Catholic schoolteacher. Friends and family soon find out about the relationship and the repercussions reach far and wide and sparks fly as cultures clash and personalities collide.
Roisin, a Catholic teacher at a Catholic school receives little support from her own community and realizes her private life is not as private as she might think. As for Casim, he deals with the shame and heartbreak that he has brought on his family and the realization that they will never accept a 'goree', a white girl. Prejudices are felt on both sides and it is Casim and Roisin that are caught in the middle.
