Evil (Ondskan) Dir. Mikael Hafstrom, Swedish, 2003
Having been involved in one brawl too many with his fellow students, headstrong teenager Erik Ponti (Andreas Wilson) is expelled from his local school. Attempting to protect Erik from his abusive stepfather's reaction to the news, and as a last ditch effort to enable him to graduate, Erik's mother (Marie Richardson) arranges for him to spend his final academic year at the exclusive Stjarnsberg Boarding School.
Steeped in old traditions, the school believes in the principles of "fraternal upbringing", whereby rules and disciplinary procedures are left in the hands of a council consisting of the school's most senior pupils. Led by the imperious Otto Silverhielm (Gustaf Skarsgard), the council's word is law, with severe and humiliating punishments dealt out to anybody who dares to break the rules. Nominated for the Oscar for Best Foreign Language Film in 2004.
