Rural doctor Van Taeke (Maximum Croiset), a respected and skilled man, has his own ideas concerning his profession. During the numerous daily activities he encounters: exceptional, annoying, sensitive, comic situations, life-like events cross this path. After a local patient commits suicide, Van Taeke and his opinions are not favorably accepted by many in the community.

Based on the novel by Antoon Coolen. The first of Rademakers films to be nominated for an Oscar at the Academy Awards as Best Foreign Language Film (1960)
