It's 1940 and Violette Bushell (Virginia McKenna) is indulging her French mother's idea to offer hospitality to a French soldier who is on leave in London and may be feeling a little homesick. Thus Violette meets Etienne Szabo (Alain Saury), a rather handsome officer and it spurred on by the accelerated need to live life fully that often happens in wartime, it isn't long before they are married and starting a family.

The almost inevitable happens, and Etienne is killed in action in North Africa, leaving Violette a war widow. Because of her knowledge of France and it's language she is asked if she would like to volunteer to help the resistance in France against the occupying German army.

Violette undergoes training in England before being teamed with underground co-ordinator Tony Fraser (Paul Schofield), with whom she undertakes her hazardous missions. A romance blossoms between them, but these are dangerous times and Violette is playing a very high risk game.

Michael Caine appears briefly as one of the prisoners on the train. As Violette starts to escape he leans forwards and calls out for water.
