A Fernando di Leo double feature starring Henry Silva!
The Boss, the third chapter of the trilogy about organized crime which di Leo had started with Milan Calibre 9 and continued with Man Hunt, explores the Mafia world starting from the best-seller with the same title by the American writer, Peter McCurtin.
The book is just a starting point as di Leo submerges the dynamics of the plot in the historical reality of Italy during those years as well as a film of amazing narrative compactness even compared to other masterpieces made by him. It is an act of accusation and a revelation of the mechanisms used by the Mafia, from the connivance with politics and those with the police, and the powers of the ecclesiastical world which surpasses the so-called socially committed films of that period.
The sharp attacks however, did not go unnoticed and action was brought against the producer by a minister of the government who claims he was referred to by way of the character, as well as in name, as an associate of the Mafia. The Boss, dark and nihilistic, locked into the representation of a city, Palermo where it is always night, is a sort of point of no return in di Leo’s cinematographic works and is probably his most heart-felt and desperate film.
The main character, Henry Silva, was a fan of the director who used him again in 1985, when he made KILLER VS KILLERS (DEATH COMMANDO), thought out with the intention of re-making The Asphalt Jungle by Huston. As much as di Leo’s talent had to fight with dramatic economiclogistic limitations, the film has the characteristics of a good consumer product with plenty of action and efficient in its definition of certain characters, starting with Silva, who brings to life a silent and cold killer, named Sterling, is a tribute to Sterling Hayden, the main character in Huston’s classic. Killer vs Killers was not released in Italy and this is the first time it can be seen again in its original and strictly uncut version.
