Though he would forever be hailed as The King of Italian Horror, director Mario Bava brought his stunning visual style to virtually every genre of international cinema. In these eight movies from the latter half of his legendary career, Il Maestro turned his extraordinary eye to extreme gothic horror, mod murder mystery, spaghetti western satire, a sex comedy inspired by Rashomon, the gore shocker that single-handedly created the "body-count" craze, and two distinctly different versions of his surreal macabre classic. Each disc has been transferred from original European vault elements to complete the definitive celebration of one of the most influential filmmakers of all time
LISA AND THE DEVIL / HOUSE OF EXORCISM
Mario Bava first directed LISA AND THE DEVIL, a lush, lyrical film about a beautiful, mysterious woman who goes on a terrifying journey of murder, necrophilia and horrific revelations. It is widely regarded as one of Bava's finest films and certainly his most ambitious. The film later was re-edited and released as THE HOUSE OF EXORCISM, adding the horror of diabolical possession, following The Exorcist's phenomenal success.

BAY OF BLOOD (REAZIONE A CATENA / TWITCH OF THE DEATH NERVE)
Though most do not watch Mario Bava films for their tightly constructed plots, this film still provided much of the inspiration for the first two FRIDAY THE 13TH films, as well as some of the actual scenes. The plot hinges on a bunch of murderous relatives who are all competing for position to inherit the estate of the matron of the family, which is mainly the bayside resort at which they are staying. However, a gaggle of teens show up and see a bit too much and, well, it becomes the BAY OF BLOOD...

KIDNAPPED and RABID DOGS
For Master Of The Macabre Mario Bava (BLACK SUNDAY), it was to be the most startling film of his entire career: After a botched payroll heist, a trio of vicious criminals take hostages in a desperate getaway that explodes with cruelty, degradation and shocking violence. But when the film’s financier was killed during the last stages of production, his entire estate – including the sole unfinished work print of RABID DOGS – was seized and impounded by an Italian court. Mario Bava’s final masterpiece – and one of the most intense EuroCrime thrillers of all time – would remain locked away for nearly 23 years.
Anchor Bay’s presentation of RABID DOGS includes both Bava’s original film – now with newly created opening and end credit sequences – as well the version known as KIDNAPPED featuring footage shot by producer Alfredo Leone and Mario’s son and longtime assistant Lamberto Bava.
Imagine Quentin Tarantino remaking Last House On The Left inside a speeding car… That's Mario Bava's Rabid Dogs, a brutal and ironic kidnapping story whose unflinching realism makes it unlike any other film made by Italy's foremost director of horror and fantasy.
The violent, pessimistic and darkly ironical story of Rabid Dogs says much about why Bava sought refuge in art, why fear was his favorite subject, and why he felt compelled to stylize everything in his films- from the colored gel lighting that illuminates his actors, to their unrelenting acts of violence.
Rabid Dogs is to Bava what Detour is to the filmography of Edgar G. Ulmer, a minimalist noir masterpiece that shows how much drama he was capable of conjuring onscreen with little or no means. The release of Rabid Dogs is a monumentous occasion for Italian genre buffs, and also one of the greatest technical achievements! Stars Riccardo Cucciolla, Lea Lander, Maurice Poli, George Eastman & Don Backy.

"End of The Road" - Making RABID DOGS & KIDNAPPEDBio
ROY COLT AND WINCHESTER JACK
Horror maestro Mario Bava (Black Sunday) goes down a different trail with this zany satire of Sergio Leone's "Dollars" trilogy! Roy Colt ("Four Times That Night's" Brett Halsey) and Winchester Jack (Charles Southwood) are two roguish cowboys whose gang isn't very successful at earning a dishonest dollar. The two friends go their separate ways, with Roy vowing to find an honest job. But he changes his mind after arriving in Carson City, where he's made sheriff and entrusted with the replica of a stolen treasure map leading to a fortune in buried gold.
Who will reach the gold first? Will it be Roy? The Reverend ("Five Dolls for an August Moon's" Teodoro Corra), a Russian outlaw with a fist full of dynamite? Jack and his gang? Or perhaps Mahila (Marilu Tolo), a mercenary Native American seductress desired by the Old West's Most Wanted? The answer may surprise you as they all have a date with a skull and an open grave in an ancient Indian burial ground!

5 DOLLS FOR AN AUGUST MOON (5 BAMBOLE PER LA LUNA D'AGOSTO / FIVE DOLLS FOR AN AUGUST MOON)
George Stark, a wealthy industrialist and playboy, gathers a group of bourgeois friends at his isolated island beach house for the weekend. His guest of honor is Gerry Farrell, a brilliant chemist who has discovered a remarkable new formula.
Farrell doesn't care to discuss business, but the businessmen in attendance are determined to talk money -- in the millions. Each of them angers the others with secret bids and back alley deals, spawning an atmosphere of distrust, exacerbated by the sexual intrigue in the air between the men and their various wives and mistresses.
Suspicions begin to rise when the guests begin to turn up dead, one by one! Mario Bava strikes again -- and again -- in this stylish and wicked whodunit. Stars William Berger, Ira Von Furstenberg, Edwige Fenech, Howard Ross & Maurice Poli.

FOUR TIMES THAT NIGHT (QUANTE VOLTE QUELLA NOTTE)
In the tradition of Akira Kurosawa's classic tale Rashomon comes this wild sex farce from Italy's master of the macabre, Mario Bava. Last night was a wild one for Tina (Daniela Giordano) and Gianni (Brett Halsey), but for the life of her, the confused woman can't quite recall how she ended up in bed with her handsome and mysterious date.
Did the seemingly pleasant date lead to a night of passion-fueled consensual sex between Gianni and Tina, or did Gianni deliberately force himself on Tina in a horrific act of rape? Both the scratches on Gianni's forehead and Tina's torn dress seem to point to some mishap that may have occurred over the course of their date, but matters are infinitely complicated when Tina's overly protective mother and her nosey concierge chime in with two entirely different takes on the evening's events.
Only when viewers witness the story from all four unique vantage points will they begin to understand the events that truly unfolded over the course of Tina and Gianni's lost evening together.
